Travis County: Over-65 Property Tax Exemption

Last Updated: August 31, 2026

Travis County seniors get the statewide $2,00,000 school-district exemption at 65+, the same as every Texas county. What varies here is the local-option exemption that non-school taxing units in Travis County may add.

This page explains what the published rules say. It is not tax, legal or financial advice, and it is not a determination of your eligibility. Only your county appraisal district can tell you whether you qualify. Figures are for the tax year shown and were last verified on the date shown.

School exemption

Like every Texas county, Travis County homeowners 65+ exempt $2,00,000 of appraised value from school district taxes — $140,000 from the general homestead exemption plus $60,000 additional for being 65 or older, per the statewide over-65 exemption.

Local option (non-school taxes)

Travis County itself offers a local-option 65+/disabled exemption of $143,220 (2025 tax year), per the county's own Fiscal Year 2026 Taxpayer Impact Statement. The City of Austin's own local option was not independently confirmed — confirm with Travis Central Appraisal District.
