Why County-Level Data Matters
State exemption amounts are only the starting point. Many counties offer additional local exemptions on top of the state minimum. Travis County (Austin), for example, offers an additional $85,000 local exemption — meaning Austin-area seniors can exempt far more of their home value than seniors in rural Texas counties with only the state baseline.
Filing deadlines also vary. While April 30 is the standard Texas deadline for homestead exemptions, some counties accept late filings through December for first-time filers. Missing the deadline can cost you an entire year of savings, so knowing your specific county's rules is critical.
Covered Counties
Our database currently covers 15 major counties across the 5 states in our system: Harris, Dallas, Travis, Bexar, Tarrant, and Fort Bend in Texas; Cook, DuPage, and Lake in Illinois; Los Angeles and Orange in California; Miami-Dade and Broward in Florida; and Nassau and Suffolk in New York.
If your county is not listed, contact your County Appraisal District (Texas), County Assessor (Illinois, California, New York), or County Property Appraiser (Florida) directly. They are required by law to provide exemption application information at no charge.
