Why County-Level Data Matters
State exemption amounts are only the starting point. Many Texas counties and cities offer additional local-option exemptions on non-school taxes on top of the statewide $200,000 school exemption. We only publish a specific county or city figure once we've confirmed it against a primary source — see our county comparison page for exactly which figures are verified today.
Filing deadlines also vary. While April 30 is the standard Texas deadline for homestead exemptions, some counties accept late filings through December for first-time filers. Missing the deadline can cost you an entire year of savings, so knowing your specific county's rules is critical.
Covered Counties
Our database currently covers 19 major counties across the 5 states in our system: Harris, Dallas, Fort Bend, Travis, Bexar, Tarrant, Collin, Denton, Williamson, and Montgomery in Texas; Cook, DuPage, and Lake in Illinois; Los Angeles and Orange in California; Miami-Dade and Broward in Florida; and Nassau and Suffolk in New York. For Texas, local-option (non-school) exemption amounts are shown only where independently verified — otherwise we say so rather than guess.
If your county is not listed, contact your County Appraisal District (Texas), County Assessor (Illinois, California, New York), or County Property Appraiser (Florida) directly. They are required by law to provide exemption application information at no charge.
